Problem With Attachments In Outlook Express? My dad uses Outlook Express. For some reason, if someone sends him a video, he has to save it to his computer to open it. I only have this problem with video files only. Any other file works good. All video files are set to open to VLC player by default. It used to be WMP and when it was, we didn't have this problem. This is the error message when trying to play video files in Outlook Express: "This file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action. Create an association in the folder options control panel."

AQuestionMark replied: "You have to setup the file association .mpg(movie file extension) with VLC 1. open window explorer, tools menu, folder options, file types tab, locate the line MPG Movie clip under "Registered file types:", click to select the line 2. click advanced button, locate the line open, click to select it, click edit... button, Action: Open Application used to perform action: C:\Program Files\VLC\Vlc.exe "%1" (or use the browse button to locate the Vlc executable, then add "%1" at the end) check use DDE Application: vlc topic: System click ok to finish If video format is wmv instead, locate the line wmv instead"

Power Point attachment in Outlook Express? I finally got around to installing Service Pack 2 and I just received a PowerPoint attachment in an e-mail. When I attempted to open it I received the following message: "This file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action. "Create an association in the Folders Option control Panel". I have PowerPoint reader and never had a problem before today. Oddly enough, I was able to read that attachment by saving it to the desktop, but who wants to go through that extra work. Something must have been altered to cause this with the installation of Service Pack 2. What's the solution? Thanks!

bruce replied: "you need help [ GET RID OF OUT LOOK ] then it will work"

Deborah A replied: "If they sent it in the new format XLS that comes with 2007 you need to update your viewer. If not you may need to reinstall the viewer as Microsoft considers it not part of your office and therefore during the update it disabled it. Your Outlook is fine. Unless it came in as an .ink file then you need to go into Outlook, Tools, Options and change it to accept attachments."

abfabmom1 replied: "Actually, that's going to happen with almost all of your file types. In updating the OS, you have erased the piece of data (don't want to call it a file) that says, "use this program to open these file types". More than likely, the first .jpg or .gif you get will get you the same response. You should only have to tell the system once which program to use for each file type."

When I get a powerpoint (pps, ppt) file as an attachment, I can't click and open it.? I can save it to My Documents and open it. It says to creatte a file association in Folder Options and I have done it but it still will not open directly from my Outlook Express email. What can I do? I do have powerpoint viewer and office 2002. I don't have a problem opening them once I save them to My Documents. It 's just that I can't directly open them in my email.

Danlow replied: "You probably cant open the file because you dont have power point installed... To view the power point file you must either #1 Go buy microsoft office for 200 bucks or however much it costs and install power point... or the better option #2 Download the free power point viewer (which allows you to view the files but not create your own). get it here Once you install that, you should be able to open the files from outlook."

Tamara replied: "Right click on the attachment and select "Open" in the drop down box."

Outlook Express question? I get this message trying to open an attachment. This file does not have a program associated with it performing this action. Create an association in the folder options control panel. Please explain in detail.Thanks.

redsoxer replied: "It means you don't have the program that created the file."

...Sky the Limits... replied: "Well, this is because the attachment you are trying to open, there is no program that can open it... Lets say the file you are trying to open is a Microsoft Excel File (whatever.xls) and you don't have Microsoft Excel Installed on your PC, how will you open it? What this message means is that, Windows dooesn't know which program should it use to open this file, so, it asks you if you know...if you do, then simply select the program from the list...and thats it... Otherwise, you need ot install the program that runs this specific file type... You can use this site to detemine the file type you ar etrying to access and the program Associated with it: PS: The site only contains the file extension For example: yahoo.txt the file extension is "txt" Hope this answers your question..."
